The period of navigation is generally from April 1 to November 30, but it may differ by a few days from one insurer to the next. Outside of that period, boats must be winterized. Unlike those who have automobile insurance, our boaters are not entitled to receive reimbursement for storing their boats during the winter period. The insurance premium has already been calculated based on seasonal use.<\/p>\n
It is important to know that there is a navigation zone that must be respected (between the 40th and 52nd parallels in Canada and in the United States). However, for those of you who are lucky enough to be extending your summer by heading South, it is possible to add additional coverage to your insurance policy by speaking to your broker.<\/p>\n
Winterizing your boat is very important in order for frost damage to be covered by your insurance policy. Most insurers require winterization to be carried out by a qualified professional. If you would like to do it yourself, make sure to check your policy beforehand.<\/p>\n
Are you aware of the standard procedures that your insurer requires with regard to protection from boat theft? It is of the utmost importance to verify this information with your broker in order to comply with the insurer\u2019s requirements. Some may require that your trailer hitch be locked with a specific coupler lock, even if the trailer and boat are located in a locked area of the marina. For those of you with boats with outboard motors or inboard\/outboard motors, you must also determine whether you are required to install an anti-theft locking ring on the motor shaft.<\/p>\n
