In some situations, road conditions may force you to immobilize the car and take refuge in it.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>HERE ARE A FEW TIPS TO BETTER PREPARE YOU FOR SUCH AN EVENT:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Before leaving, let your loved ones know at what time you expect to arrive and which route you will be taking.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure you\u2019re always driving on a full tank of gas.<\/li>\n<li>Always have your cell phone on you and make sure it\u2019s fully charged.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>WHAT STEPS DO YOU NEED TO TAKE IF YOU MUST IMMOBILIZE YOUR CAR?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>As soon as you&#8217;ve stopped, dial 9-1-1 to notify the emergency response team of your location.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid getting out of your car and wasting energy. Physical effort in cold weather can be the cause of several ailments.<\/li>\n<li>It is important to ensure that the exhaust pipe of your vehicle is not blocked by snow or ice. This could allow carbon monoxide to enter the vehicle and poison you.<\/li>\n<li>Let the window with the least wind exposure slightly ajar for fresh air to circulate.<\/li>\n<li>Wear a warm hat. 60% of your body\u2019s heat is lost through the head.<\/li>\n<li>Keep moving and stay awake.<\/li>\n<li>Use the engine as little as possible.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tc.gc.ca\/eng\/motorvehiclesafety\/safevehicles-safetyfeatures-winterdriving-index-693.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Transport Canada<\/a> (they don\u2019t skimp on security, you\u2019ll see) advises to have a security kit ready, which should contain the following items:\n<ul>\n<li>A flashlight<\/li>\n<li>A ice scraper and snow brush<\/li>\n<li>A shovel and traction aid<\/li>\n<li>Battery booster cables<\/li>\n<li>Warm clothes<\/li>\n<li>A blanket<\/li>\n<li>Matches and candles to warm your hands without having to use the car battery or emptying the gas tank<\/li>\n<li>Flares and a reflective vest<\/li>\n<li>Water and food<\/li>\n<li>A first-aid kit<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Bad weather is hard to predict and with our harsh winters, plans must be made for an emergency&#8230; Sometimes even on highway\u00a013 in the heart of Montreal!
