Although the days have been getting longer since December 21, the darkest day of the year, they aren’t doing so as quickly as we would like. If you’ve got a little spare cash, there’s a solution: escape winter in Quebec and go bask in the sun on our neighbours’ hot beaches. Here’s a list of things to pack:

Light clothing

Sandals

Sunscreen

Beach towel

Passport

Frisbee

Of course, everything will go smoothly. You won’t have any health concerns, cut your hand on coral, get sick, have heat stroke, have a bad fall after a record number of cocktails, or be in a scooter accident. In short, you certainly won’t need travel insurance. Anyways, you’re pretty sure that you’re covered by your credit card or some type of plan at work, and your famous Quebec health card must pay for something. After all, don’t we pay enough taxes?

Well, it doesn’t work that way.

The credit card

Your credit card may have significant limitations when it comes to maximum compensation, as well as restrictive clauses, such as requiring that the trip have been paid for with that card. Not to mention that you might not have purchased this type of coverage or that it might not be included in your credit card package.

Health insurance

Did you know that when you leave the country, up to 90% of your health insurance coverage is left at home? In the best case scenario, you’ll pay up front and wait for reimbursement later. In the worst case scenario, you’ll be on the hook for pretty much the entire bill—a bill that is often not negotiable and issued in a foreign language, giving you little chance of having your say about potential overbilling. For example, in the United States a day in the hospital could easily cost $5000. What about health insurance?

In fact, health insurance covers:

A maximum of CAN$100 per day for hospitalization

Up to CAN$50 per day for healthcare received at a hospital outpatient clinic

So we’re pretty far off the mark….

Your work’s group insurance plan

In general, this plan may provide you with good coverage. However, you’ll have to read your coverage very carefully and contact your representative, if necessary.

For a safer trip, visit our website or contact us at 1-877-853-2475 to purchase more comprehensive travel insurance!

On this note, have a great trip, buen viaje, boa viagem, buon viaggio!

A few key points for an insurance policy with medical coverage of up to $5 000 000:

– Hospital fees

– Doctors’ charges

– Emergency air transportation and return transportation to your home

– Diagnostic services

– Paramedical services, notably chiropractic and osteopathic treatment

– Prescription medications

– Ambulance services

– Dental care

– Repatriation of remains

– Child accompaniment

Whether winter is mild or cold, snowy, wet or dry, or grey or white, it is always too long.
